With an unemployment rate still hovering near 10 percent, there about 6 applicants for every job you apply for lately. And it seems that lots of you are getting desperate.
But how far would you go to get a job in this economy? One guy decided shaving his head while all the world watched was a good job-landing strategy.
Eric Romer saw a Twitter posting for a marketing job with razor blade company HeadBlade and immediately decided to launch a mini marketing campaign to land the gig.
He first created the “Hire Me, HeadBlade” blog and on it made a case for himself under a “Why Me?” post.
Aside from being creepy (according to the creepy-looking guy in the orange shirt), I have the skills & experience for this position, fueled by a passion for Headblade’s products. I started shaving my head in 2002, but discovered the Headblade in ‘05. Life has never been better….
He also created a Facebook fan page, and tweeted journalists like me. (I’m a sucker for stories like this.)
“I wanted to demonstrate I knew how to brand and launch a campaign online,” said Romer.
The kicker for me, and maybe the bigwigs at HeadBlade, was the video of Romer shaving his head with a HeadBlade razor, an idea suggested by a marketing manager he knew:
This could have been a very smart idea or a very dumb idea. But the point is, Romer took a chance and did something different.
It paid off for him.
“I got a response within 24 hours, and the CEO/Founder flew me out to interview less than a week later (I was living in Indianapolis at the time),” explained Romer about the job in Culver City, CA. “I drove cross-country on Jan. 5th.”
He started his new gig as marketing manager on Jan. 18.
The local TV station in Indianapolis even did a story on the guy.
I’m sure if you asked any career expert if shaving your head on YouTube is a good idea, their answer would be a resounding: “Are you crazy?”
But in this job market it can not be denied that setting yourself apart works.
What’s the craziest thing you could do to land a gig? Just let your mind go wild. If you had the guts, what would you take a chance on? Tell us and we’ll tell you if you’re crazy or not. If we say “crazy” you probably should go for it.
