Do Dads deserve more than a soap-on-a-rope?16 Jun 2009 08:28 am

soap.jpgSo I’m still wondering why my loving husband sent me this story about how fathers get no respect on Father’s Day.

Geoff Williams wrote on Parenting.com:

I think we dads merit at least a little more than boxer shorts, soap-on-a-rope, and neckties. We don’t get the good stuff because we’re paying for the sins of our fathers, and our fathers’ fathers. But these days, dads are changing diapers, warming bottles, and taking our kids to the park. We may not be where you want us yet, but we’ve evolved, and we’re involved.

I need to tread lightly here. I love my husband very much. He’s my best friend and confidant, and he does more around the house and for the family than most fathers out there.

But…. You knew a “but” was coming. I know you did.

But, and I think he’d agree, I tend to do more of the daily, family heavy lifting.

Why do I do this? It’s a bit hard to explain because I don’t get it myself.

Here I am this ultra feminazi doing more of the socalled mommy stuff…cooking, cleaning, drawing funny pictures on my kids paper lunch bags. (I spent this morning telling my 7 year old son that people are grossed out by boogers and he should make sure to wipe his nose.)

I was never one of those women that craved motherhood, or marriage for that matter. I loved kids and I hoped to meet my soul mate, but I didn’t spend nights pinning for either.

But here I am June Cleavering my way through life.june.jpg

OK, I’m not exactly June. I do have a life outside my family and I cherish that. But I’m also focused on making everything run smoothly and making sure my kids and hubby are happy and healthy.

It’s like a woman virus. We can’t shake this need to nurture the ones we love.

That means we take over a lot of things that hubbies probably could handle if given the chance. Although, my best buddy Mary and I have surmised that guys mess up easy household tasks so we stop asking them to do things. Call it a hubby conspiracy. One example, is when husbands do the laundry and somehow forget to wash that sweater we love in the gentle cycle with cold water. Or when they call you ten times from the grocery store to make sure they’re buying the right stuff even though they have a list and have been eating the stuff on the list for years.

The bottom line is working moms are really the donkeys of society.

Asses were first domesticated around 3000 BCE, approximately the same time as the horse, and have spread around the world. They continue to fill important roles in many places today and domesticated species are increasing in numbers. As “beasts of burden” and companions, asses and donkeys have worked together with humans for centuries.

Maybe dads don’t deserve a soap-on-a-rope, but working moms really deserve a bit more recognition, and maybe their own damn holiday.

I’m starting a new movement to create Working Mother’s Day. Join me!

Men can join too, especially if they come bearing big, lavish gifts.
