I get so many emails from readers of my Your Career column on MSNBC.com asking me why the heck they never hear back from employers after they send their resumes.
Well, it turns out, many companies aren’t hiring.
Employers in the private sector sent out the fewest job offer letters last month than they have in the last four years, according to the Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP)’s national employment report.
“Nonfarm private employment grew 38,000 from July to August of 2007 on a seasonally adjusted basis,” said Joel Prakken, Chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC. “This month’s ADP National Employment Report suggests that a deceleration of employment may be underway. The August increase of 38,000 was the smallest since June of 2003 and the second consecutive weak monthly reading.”
So, I guess job seekers can take heart and say, “it’s not me, it’s them.”

i dont send out a resume unless i see a job posting, and even then i dont hear back from people. it is very frustrating. or i get the standard we have chosen someone else for this position, have a great day. but when you see that same ad still running contiuously for three weeks, something is not right……..

Yeah, what is up with that. I have to do a story on these jobs that are posted but no one ever really gets hired. It’s often an HR person trying to show they did their due diligence and posted a job, but is there really a job…are they hiring from within…are they just keeping busy.. What is it?
